A Bugs life…

Imagine you have never been to college, you don’t have any health insurance, don’t have a degree, and your job sucks because you don’t like it. I have lived a bug’s life before! Never again do I want to go back to that kind of life. There are a lot of ideas out there and people will always tell you what to do with your life; “You need to go to college” or  “you don’t need to go to college”. I think these ideas are rubbish if that’s not what you want. “Live from your heart”. If you want to go to college then go for it and if you don’t then…yeah, don’t. The point I want to say is it’s all up to you.

The anti-college people always say things like “Look at Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerburg. They all dropped out of college and look at where they are now.” Well the thing is not everyone that drops out of college becomes a multi-millionaire. There are a lot of people out there with no money, stressed and sitting at home with nothing to do.

The pro college people usually state the security and safety that comes with a degree. “You can’t get a good job without a degree”. For me this has turned out to be a myth after 2008. Why? I’m glad you asked. See after the economic down fall in 2008 a lot of people in the middle class got laid off, lost their investments and had to worry about how to pay their bills. All this after 4 years at college and maybe 3 or 4 years working for the company. Meanwhile the CEO’s got paid their millions and went away to buy a new house in Dubai.

Whatever you decide. It is ultimately up to you. If you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something big, create facebook, google, Apple or whatever it is your working on then all hands down, go for it! If you want to go to college or If you are part of the 10% that love their job. Go for it! “I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 2:12-14

Live from your heart. What matters is what you want for your life. Going to college or starting your business is like paying lots of money for a gym membership. We all know that exercise is great for us, and so is starting a business or going to college. But we know it takes a lot of work and determination to work out. 3 years ago I paid R400 for a gym membership at UCT and only went to the gym for one week!

Whatever it is you decide for your life, “Don’t live a bug’s life!”. Examine your heart. I know what I want for my life and it will definitely require a great amount of work to achieve it. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where we are all going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

As Theodore Roosevelt  said “It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.”
